Forth Valley Migrant Support Network

December 2015
Thank you to everyone who attended our St. Andrew’s Day event “Europe on a plate”. The food and drink event took place on 30th November 2015 at the Bowhouse Community Hall.
We had a great turnout from the local diverse community. Everyone enjoyed learning about each other cultures through sharing traditional home cooked food. Some of the dishes we had on the menu were: pierogi & kotleciki  from Poland; goulash & apple strudel from Hungary; banitza & kebapche from Bulgaria; stovies, haggis & tablet from Scotland; cepelinai from Lithuania.
Many thanks to our cooks and volunteers who made the event such a success.
Here are a few photos of our “Europe on a plate” food and drink event.

The event was funded by BEMIS Scotland via the ‘Year of Food and Drink 2015 / Winter Festivals’ small grants programme.
This is a partnership between BEMIS Scotland and the Scottish Government to facilitate diverse, multicultural celebrations.

July 2014
We are thrilled and excited to announce we have been awarded 2 grants in the last two months.

We have received Express Grant from Foundation Scotland to contribute towards transport costs for outreach work and volunteer expenses for the drop in centre casework and administration work. The funder who made our award possible is Baillie Gifford Community Awards Fund.

Thank You so much Baillie Gifford Community Awards Fund and Foundation Scotland for your support!

Also we have been successful in our funding application for the core service from Falkirk Council Community Grant Scheme. The grant will enable us to pay for the running cost of our drop in centre in Grangemouth. That means our service users will benefit from the free walk in support and practical advice services until the grant  end June 2015.

Thank You so much Falkirk Council  for your support!

In November 2013 we have been awarded  two- year grant from The Allen Lane Foundation. The award is towards the rent payment of the premises of our drop in centre till end of 2015.

Thank You so much The Allen Lane Foundation for your support!

December 10th

We attended the Annual General Meeting of the  Scottish Gypsy Traveller Movement `Building Bridges` on December 9th 2013. We heard about one of the projects "The Porrajmos - The Gypsy Holocaust" that raises awareness of 200,000 Roma killed in the Nazi death camps. This presentation has won awards from education departments.

Some of the participants in "A Confident Citizen" workshop presented at Bo`ness Job Club
The feed back was terrific and the consensus of opinion was that an hour with Diane is better than anything the dole office has to offer. Job seekers from Boness sometimes have to walk from Bo`ness to Grangemouth to access services. The Job Club gives access to computers for job searches and top advice on CVs.

Thank You for Attending the second workshop of our  "A Confident Citizen" Training!

Thank you very much for coming to our free Confidence & Employment  workshop today.

We hope that you found the class informative and worthwhile. There were many topics covered during the workshop and our Confidence coach Diane Davis – Bailey did an outstanding job of sharing her expertise with you.

You were a great group and your enthusiasm and positive spirit helped make our time together both productive and fun.

We wish you all the best in your future job hunting and we are committed to helping you along the way.
Again, thank you for being part of our Confidence & Employment workshop and please recommend this training to others in the future.

On 9 May 1950, Robert Schuman, the first President of the European Parliamentary Assembly, presented his proposal on the creation of an organised Europe, indispensable to the maintenance of peaceful relations.

This proposal, known as the 'Schuman declaration', is considered to be the beginning of the creation of what is now the European Union. Since then 9 May has become Europe Day, which, across the EU, is celebrated with activities, festivals, lectures, public events and a diverse range of cultural and artistic presentations and entertainments. The aim of all this activity is to bring European institutions closer to its citizens and the peoples of the Union closer to one another.

In 2013 the European Union is also celebrating 20 years since the European Union was official brought into being through Maastricht Treaty (formally, the Treaty on European Union or TEU), 2013 has been designated the "European Year of Citizens” because the Maastricht treaty established in Article 2 of the treaty, for the first time, the rights and protections of Europe’s Citizens. Because of this, 9 May 2013 will have a very strong citizens focus across the EU.

For the UK, 2013 marks the 40th anniversary of the UK joining the European Economic Community, the predecessor of the European Union.

February 2013
On 26th February 2013 we had a meeting with Yuliya Loutsenko from 'Open Secret'. Yuliya explained to us that 'Open Secret' runs a program where if a child or indeed their parents have problems through race, creed or colour then they will intervene by helping the child. It might be something as little as taunting because their parents speak with a heavy accent, the main thing is to identify if an issue is hampering a child well being.
Open Secret can be contacted through Forth Valley Migrant Support Network. We are also happy to offer our own office space for one to one confidential sessions.
For more information about Open Secret visit their website  Open Secret

Event Postponement Announcement

5th February 2013

With much disappointment we are sad to announce that the tonight's "A Confident Citizen" event  has been postponed  due to weather conditions.  The Committee members will now meet on Thursday 7th February to discuss new venue and time.

We are sorry to disappoint anyone that had planned on coming but we can only respond to booked places. The work for the event is all done and it will only take a couple of small adjustments to posters to inform people of the intended date.

Please accept our apologies for the postponement!

Standing together for International Migrants Day - 18 December

18 of  December is International Migrants Day. This is a day identified by the United Nations to recognise and respect the fundamental rights and freedoms of all migrants. It is also the day when, in 2000, the UN General Assembly adopted the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families.

In order to put International Migrants Day on the map The Migrants' Rights Network is launching a campaign called ‘Our Day: Standing together for International Migrants Day’.

Here is our support for the campaign.
